01 / The role of the work

What is a fractional CMO?

A fractional Chief Marketing Officer takes on the leadership of your marketing function for part of the working week. The role covers strategy, priorities, budgets, team leadership and the decisions that connect marketing to the business.

I work inside your team: in the planning, the reviews and the conversations with your agencies. Your team and partners keep doing the work. I give that work direction and take responsibility for the marketing mandate.

The engagement starts with a six-month minimum and is open-ended by design. The amount of time depends on the leadership your team needs.

01 / Direction

Make the choices.

Positioning, priorities, the marketing plan and how it supports the commercial objectives. A shared direction the team can use to decide what to do next.

Output: a clear plan and an agreed set of priorities.

02 / People

Lead the people doing it.

Team leadership, hiring decisions, agencies and vendors. Clear briefs, useful feedback and someone who can resolve competing priorities.

Output: ownership, direction and a working team cadence.

03 / Performance

Carry the number.

Budget decisions, performance reviews and honest measurement. Connect the activity to the business outcome, and change the plan when the evidence calls for it.

Output: decisions grounded in the numbers.

04 / AI

Put AI to useful work.

Find where AI belongs in the marketing workflow. When the wider business needs an AI mandate too, I can hold both seats on one contract.

The combined mandate rebalances between marketing and AI as priorities change.

03 / The right fit

Where the role makes sense.

01

You have people.

Your team or agencies can execute, but marketing needs senior direction and someone to connect the work.

02

You are changing.

The function needs to be built, reorganised or led through a new stage of the business.

03

You need ownership.

You want a leader who stays in the room and follows through on the plan.

04 / Working together

Choose the depth of involvement.

These are engagement shapes, agreed around the work your company needs.

01

Strategist

Around one day a week. Strategy, prioritisation and direction for a team that executes on its own.

02

Partner

Around two days a week. Strategy plus hands-on leadership of the team, agencies and creative output.

03

Leader

Around three days a week. Embedded leadership through a transformation, including hiring, budget and the full function.

Q01 How is this different from hiring an agency?

An agency typically delivers agreed specialist work. A fractional CMO leads the marketing function, sets priorities and manages the relationship with agencies. The roles can work together.

Q02 How is this different from an advisor?

My engagement includes responsibility for leading the work with the team. I stay involved in execution, reviews and the decisions that follow.

Q03 Can you work with our existing marketing team?

Yes. I work with the team and vendors already in place, and help define where additional skills or hiring are needed.

Q04 When would a full-time CMO make more sense?

When the function needs a senior leader continuously available across the full week, a full-time hire may be the better fit. We should establish that early in the conversation.

Q05 How do we start?

Write a short description of your situation. Most relationships start with a Marketing + AI Audit. After a discovery call, I provide a fixed quote in writing within two business days.
